Secret Singing Lessons
Learn to sing, without being heard.
“Whenever I sing, someone laughs...
So I stopped singing altogether.”
When I first heard a story like this, it broke my heart...
I’ve always loved music.
When I was younger, I would often let my voice out and belt along to my favourite songs on the radio ...but as I got older, the sideways reactions from friends and family began…
"Don’t give up your day job!"
...my dad would joke, in that smarmy tone.
These little comments came my way one too many times…
...eventually I became so self-conscious of the way my voice sounds.
Now, every time I open my mouth, what comes out is wobbly, weird, or just sounds wrong.
I mean, I don’t know if I’d even call it “singing".
So now, I swallow my voice, bite my tongue, and resign myself to passively listening to the music… and leave the singing to the ones with ‘talent’...
Over my 10 years as a vocal coach, I’ve heard this story SO many times.
I hear this so often... not just from clients, but from complete strangers who, as soon as they hear what I do for work, tell me “I’d love to take singing lessons, but...” they’d be too embarrassed, nervous, or shy to sing in front of anyone (especially a singing teacher).
The only place these people feel comfortable singing is driving alone, on the highway, windows rolled up, radio blasting where there is a guarantee that NO ONE could ever hear them…
...and then it hit me:
I realized that the “car singer” had the secret all along!
Rather than expecting someone to conjure the confidence to open their mouths and sing with gusto, I could reverse-engineer the “natural soundproofing” that exists all around us (often hidden in plain sight)...
...and use my unique training in anatomy-based vocal technique to create a program where anyone can improve their voice in a quiet (or completely silent) way.
I invented “Secret Singing Lessons".
I'd become frustrated with the traditional approach of teaching singing, and realized that much of the world of vocal training was centered around becoming a professional performer, rather than a joyful exploration of the voice.
The joy of singing is a natural human gift, however our idea of singing has been warped by the rise of pop stars, talent shows, and commercially produced music...
...and we live in a culture that has separated us into either "performer" or "audience" (and audience members should clap politely and keep their mouths shut).
I believe that singing is for everybody, and I want to make it accessible to everyone who wants to develop a relationship with their voice, whether or not they have access to a soundproof practice room or professional singing teachers.
So keep reading to learn more about how Secret Singing Lessons can help you learn to sing, without being heard by others and begin the journey towards unlocking your unique voice.
Introducing "Secret Singing Lessons"
Secret Singing Lessons is a 12-week course, designed for people who want to learn to sing, but don't feel comfortable going to private vocal lessons, or practicing singing out loud where people might hear them.
Everyone has the right to feeling comfortable and confident with their voice, and the ability to sing shouldn't be reserved for the "gifted" or "loud & gregarious".
So, if you've always wanted to learn to sing, or just want to feel like you have more control over the sound and quality of your voice, keep reading.
Secret Singing Lessons is divided into 12 weeks, with between 3-4 short lessons per week, and is designed to fit into your schedule, no matter how busy your life is.
Week 1 - Why You Think You Can't Sing
"You'd have a nice voice... if you could sing in tune..."
"Don't give up your day job..."
"Maybe you should just mouth the words..."
If you've ever been laughed at for singing, told by your school choir teacher to silently mouth the words, made to feel that your voice is unwelcome, this is the place to start.
You'll learn about the false dichotomy between performer and audience, and the myth of the "born singer", and the reason why you're probably NOT tone deaf.
I'll also take you through a series of eight exercises to calm down a shaky voice (by stabilizing your fight-or-flight response), and a guided journaling exercise to unpack and understand any negative programming you may have gotten from family, friends, or culture about your voice.
Week 2 - Silent Singing Practice
In Week 2, you'll learn the truth about singing practice, why you don't have to be able read music in order to sing, and I'll bust a whole bunch of myths about singing that you've probably been told over the years.
I'll take you through different ways to do 5min "silent singing sessions" wherever you are, and how to find hidden pockets of practice time that you can use to give your voice a boost.
I'll introduce you to the idea of Non-Musical Soundmaking: my secret weapon to give beginners access to their voice in a way that removes all the pressure of singing (or sounding "good").
Finally, I'll give you a simple tool to help you track your internal experience and develop a powerful connection to the inner movements of your body (especially subtle, small muscles like the vocal folds).
Week 3 - Open Your Ears with Conscious Listening
How you listen to music will determine how it comes out of your mouth, so this module is all about conscious listening.
I'll show you how to add more music into your life, how I use music as a tool to enhance everyday activities, and how to discover new music you've never heard before.
Plus, an easter egg for those who go deep into the course: I've added 11 of my personal playlists, containing hundreds of songs, to give you inspiration and a jumping-off point to make creative playlists of your own.
Next, we'll expand your ears, taking you deep beyond the surface of a song, into the layers that you might be currently missing. This will give you a deeper appreciation and enrich your experience of every song you listen to.
Finally, I'll show you a fun and silent technique to open the throat, and avoid potentially damaging constriction, so that you can continue to explore and expand your range without fear of hurting your voice.
Week 4 - Secret Soundproofing and Your Body.
This module goes deeper, showing you easy methods for soundproofing spaces in your home, giving you more confidence to explore your voice in a comfortable place.
I'll take you through a guided vocal yoga sequence, including a series of stretches and simple exercises that help you to tune into your body, and "tune it up" in preparation for singing... finishing up with calming self-massage for your head and neck.
Week 5 - Breath to Sound
This week, we're going to break the "sound barrier" for the first time (but don't worry, I'm not going to throw you in the deep end).
We're going to use the gentle movement of sighing to help you settle in to making sound in a comfortable, relaxing way.
As you let a sigh become a sound, your voice will naturally feel more comfortable to emerge from hiding, without feeling forced or "pushed" off the diving board.
I've also included two custom-made Spotify playlists (with 4+ hours of songs) that I created as a supportive "soundscape" to help you gradually transition into making sound without feeling totally exposed.
Next, we'll explore the world through the lens of "private practice in public" - a creative, innovative way to find safe spaces outside of the home for you to explore your voice without fear of being heard by those around you.
(If you've already downloaded my free guide, the Secret Sound Excursion, you'll be familiar with this concept.)
I'll share my recommendations for ready-made "secret soundmaking" locations, and you will plan out all the places that may be available to you in your environment - in preparation for next week's exploration.
Week 6 - The Sound Excursion & the Power of "Silly Sounds"
This week, we explore the unfortunate damage that talent shows like Idol, Got Talent, The Voice, and X Factor can do to your "singing self image".
The normalization of humiliation-based entertainment can make you feel scared to open your mouth, for fear of an invisible panel of judges criticizing your every note.
You might just be singing alone in your room, but hours of exposure to secondhand embarrassment, seeing others branded as "bad singers", can cut off your voice before you even dare to begin.
But what is a "good" or "bad" voice... is there really such a thing?
Then you'll get to experience the magic of Non-Musical Soundmaking, where you'll be surprised to find that the making of strange noises can do more to improve your vocal control than traditional methods like scales, arpeggios, and vocal gymnastics.
I'll take you through a series of vowel and consonant exercises that will give you a feel for how your voice makes sounds, and what each sound feels like to your mouth, lips, jaw, and throat.
You'll experiment with the full spectrum of sounds in creative ways (including my "vocal story" technique to unlock parts of your voice, usually hidden away by fear of embarrassment.)
Finally, you'll take these vocal explorations out into the world as you experience the Sound Excursion that you mapped out in week 5.
Week 7 - Deep Breathing Myths & Your Diaphragm.
This module unpacks the myths and misconceptions about "deep breathing", the role of the diaphragm, and why you probably don't have to think about your breath as much as you may have been told.
I'll also share with you the reason why most of my clients need to work on using less air when they sing, rather than more.
Finally, I'll take you through my "cute puppy" and "whiney toddler" exercise - these take less than 5min each, and are a subtle, quiet way to warm up your voice, gently stretch your vocal folds, and develop the upper part of your range.
Week 8 - Why You Hate Your Recorded Voice
If you've ever heard a recording of your voice, and felt like you *never want to speak again*, don't worry, it's completely normal to feel that way.
I'll go into why this is, and why what your perception of what you sound like doesn't reflect what others are actually hearing.
You'll also learn why you should never compare your voice to professionally-recorded, multi-layered vocal tracks (recording studios have powerful tools to enhance, adjust, filter, and "photoshop" the voice in ways that most people aren't aware of).
This week's practice will take you through an exercise that I think of as "pilates for the voice". This exercise builds stability and consistency of your vocal control, in the same way pilates builds stability in your core.
We'll explore how different vowels and pitches change the quality of your sound. This exercise will help you get to know the full range of your voice, and where your "edges" are.
Week 9 - Voice Care Tips, Humming Power, and Healthy Voice Habits
This week is all about keeping your voice healthy, how to protect it against damage, and getting your "hum" on.
You'll learn why drinking water or honey-lemon tea doesn't help your voice as much as you think it might, and why clearing your throat is one of the worst things you can do for your voice (and what I recommend doing instead).
Finally, we're going to do a "hum-along" exercise, which doubles as a quiet way to use your voice, as well as an amazing vocal warm up (I also include a link to a playlist with a bunch of songs that are great to hum to!).
Week 10 - "Photoshopped" Voices vs Natural Vocal Play
This week, I'll shed more light on how the music industry "photoshops" voices, giving us an unrealistic impression of what a good singing voice should sound like.
When highly processed vocals are all we hear, this can contribute to a poor vocal self image.
The key here is: you should never compare your real-life voice to artificially enhanced studio recordings.
Next, you'll learn how to shape your sound by training the muscles of articulation.
You'll be surprised at the significant improvement in your sound that can result from applying this very simple adjustment to your vocal instrument.
If you find that people often ask you to "speak up", this technique can also help you develop a clear speaking voice that doesn't sound muffled or mumbly.
And now, for my favorite part of the program:
After 10 weeks of developing a new relationship with your voice, you are now ready to use your voice in a creative, fun way!
Using my voice and guitar as a supportive foundation, I'll take you through a guided vocal play exercise, where you'll experience the magic of creative vocal exploration.
We'll use all the simple techniques you've learned over the last 10 weeks - such as long sustained notes, breath-to-sound and humming - to take your soundmaking from "non-musical" to musical.
Week 11 - Reflection, Integration, Jam Session.

Week 12 - Your New Singing Identity.
In the final week, I have a special surprise for you to solidify your new identity as a singer...
...and a challenge (should you choose to accept it).
Now you get to decide where to take your vocal journey from here: whether you're ready to take private lessons, join a choir, or just get your karaoke on with some friends (and I'll offer a list of resources and starting points to help you find your way in your next phase as a singer).
Get started with Secret Singing Lessons today...
I've personally spent over $30,000 on university and specialized vocal skills training over the last 15 years.
I've been a vocal coach for 10 years, and have worked with more than 500 individuals on developing their vocal ability and relationship with their voice.
Private vocal coaching can set you back anywhere between $80 and $250 per hour, depending on the reputation of the teacher (and how fancy their studio is...) and you usually need at least a dozen lessons to see (and hear) real results.
I originally priced Secret Singing Lessons at $997, and it's packed full of value. However, I received feedback from many folks that they couldn't afford it at that rate.
I want singing to be available to everyone, and I want you to be able to be a part of my mission to change the world, one voice at a time.
So I halved the price.
You can get the entire 12-week Secret Singing Lessons Course for $497, with lifetime access to the videos, guided audios, and PDF guides.
The advantage to taking the course online is that you can learn at your own pace. There's absolutely no pressure to complete the course in 12 weeks - you'll be able to log in anytime and pick up from where you left off.

“I think the Secret Singing Lessons videos are incredible, I’ve learnt a lot. It’s helpful that I can replay some parts so I can understand it more.
I want to say that I am just so grateful for you. I have learnt a lot from how you approach warmups, which has helped me with how I approach teaching piano as well.
All your methods are so scientifically based and make sense. It’s true you need to understand why you are doing things, and that a billion different warmups without an understanding of why you do them is not that productive.”
- Jenny Hu
“As a busy mum, kids are both off to school and finally I’m able to really tap into my creative hobbies. Always being comfortable with other art forms, singing is something that made me feel very vulnerable and something I’d only ever dreamed of being able to do even half decently.
Seeing Bec has really helped me feel comfortable and realise I have the ability to improve (and I have!). I would confidently recommend Bec, as she is warm, very professional, knowledgeable and talented!” - Vanessa V.
“At 40 I’ve been playing music a long time, but being able to sing continually eluded me. I’d been to several other singing teachers over the years paying hundreds per class and learnt nothing. Often just sitting listening to them tell me everything I was doing wrong.
I became a shrinking violet. The opposite of who I am in real life! Bec is a fantastic communicator and listener. … She gives me practice to try. To learn. To hear and feel what I am doing with my voice. Bec understands your voice and feelings change with each day and affect each other.
She is a sensitive and supportive teacher. In the first three lessons I stopped constantly hurting my voice and understood it so much better than ever before. I could listen to other singers and understand what they were doing and what I was doing. I’ve developed my own singing voice and taken it further than I could imagine in a few short months.” - Louisa
“After having lessons with Bec my ability to control my voice is a lot stronger and my confidence has grown in leaps and bounds. I’m looking forward to having a go at an open mic, which I would never have done otherwise. To top it all I usually leave with sore cheeks from laughing – thanks for the fun and professional lessons Bec.” - Sophie Buttery
“Thank you Bec for your down-to-earth, friendly and fun teaching style.
You got this shy girl to open up and start to knock down her fears and really enjoy singing again.” - Mel Venn
“...The most important thing I’ve got out of lessons with you is a sense of peace with how I sound now, and a sense of playfulness to explore how I might sing in different ways. Very early on, you told me that singing the way I do naturally is a valid form of artistic expression. It’s a bit sad that this was a revelation, but it was.
From then on, lessons weren’t about 'fixing' something that was 'wrong', they were about developing a different set of tools that I could experiment with to express myself in different ways, when and how I wanted to.
The transition from perfectionism to playfulness has fundamentally changed the way I approach singing – which I’ve always loved. I’m still incredibly shy, but now singing alone on a stage seems like an exciting and one day achievable goal, rather than a dream that I could never actually realise for fear of stuffing up.
I’ve really appreciated the directness of your technical method, but that attitude shift was even more valuable than any set of techniques.” - Pippa Williams
“After booking my first lesson with Bec, I couldn’t have been more nervous or unsure of what to expect from it. Ten lessons down and I am thoroughly glad I didn’t back out. In the lessons we’ve had so far I’ve progressed far more rapidly and learnt more about how to sing well, than I have in all my life. I find working with her is a relaxed and professional, yet challenging and productive experience. So practice what she preaches as often as possible and I guarantee you WILL hear the results of your hard work. Also your neighbours might thank you.”
- Josh Williams
“What makes Bec exceptional is that she does not tell you the “right” way to sing [,..] I found this very useful to play around with different sounds and explore my capabilities. So far she has helped me to extend my range and get more confidence with singing.
- Simon Salinas
